Vaughan's two passions in life are yachting and motorcycles. You can usually find Vaughan at the club, working on a boat or some part of the building. Vaughan learned to sail here at CYC in 2010 and now crews on a Young 88 keelboat in Lyttelton, and has completed several coastal passages.
Luke is a highly skilled coach, who has been developing his coaching skills alongside his yachting for the last 7 years. Luke learned to sail here at CYC in 2010. Since then he has sailed Optimists and Starlings. When he gets the chance, he's out racing in either his Laser, or Hartley 16 trailer yacht
Learn to Sail Coach
Thomas is an experienced Learn to Sail coach who has been working with our Learn to Sail groups for the last 5 years. Not only is he a good yachtsman, but also, he's pretty good in a blokart. Tom is also responsible for most of the clubs photos, including almost all the ones used on this website.
Our Coaching Team at CYC
Coming from an established family in Canterbury yachting, Vaughan is a highly skilled Laser sailor, who adds great value to our Junior Programme, passing on his racing knowledge to the junior sailors.
Another member of the England family, Simon is very fast in his Laser, and takes great pride in teaching specific racing and boat handling skills to the junior sailors in his coaching sessions.
Bret de Thier
Bret has a long, and successful racing career, representing New Zealand at many levels, including the Olympics, where in 1984, he coached Russell Coutts. At CYC, Bret works with our racing juniors to get them performing at the top of their fleets.
The Rata Foundation provides our principal sponsorship for the Junior Programme, which allows us to keep costs low, maximising accessibility to our programme.
Mitre 10 MEGA Ferrymead
Thanks to Mitre 10 MEGA Ferrymead, we have a set of bright orange sails on our club optimists, making it super easy to keep an eye on our junior sailing classes.
