In May 2018 I decided it would be great to compete in the Laser Radial Oceania Masters to be sailed from the Sofitel Resort Denaru Island in Fiji.
The week before the start I decided with some trepidation to change from the Radial rig to the Full Standard Rig knowing full well if it blew 15+ knots I would be in trouble with the Full Rig.
On arrival we were supplied with brand new charter lasers shipped in from Sydney. The sailors had to supply their own sail, ropes and other adjustable fittings.
The reality of how difficult the competition was going to be set in when race 1 got underway. The wind increased to 12-15 knots with quite a chop and getting a clear start proved challenging as was all the subsequent races.I was surprised how quick all the fleet was and it was only after day one that I realised how good the competitors from the 11 countries were.Top sailors from Australia,NZ,USA,Canada,Netherlads,Sweden,Italy,England,Singapore,Thailand, and Fiji.Brett Beyer (Aust) in my fleet has won 15 World Masters,Peter Hurley (USA) runner up in a number of World Laser Masters as well as many other sailors being National or local champions.
During race 1 I somehow lost my wind pennant which I rely on so much in variable breezes and was not able to find a replacement during the championship.I was the only sailor using a mark 1 conventional cut sail while all my competitors were using the mark 2 radial sail and some on their second and third radial cut sails. It was acknowledged that the mark 2 radial sail was superior especially upwind so this did not help me being as competitive as I would like to have been.
The weather over the 5 days varied considerably, from very light shifty wind to rain squalls and wind 15-20 knots, with complete changes in direction over the afternoon, making sailing very tricky. The usual steady trade winds from the sea did not come that week.
The wind and water was very warm and lots of water(2 bottles) was consumed each afternoon.
It took race 4 and 5 for me to learn how to handle the chop and managed to get amongst the top sailors. On race 5 I was tack to tack with Brett Beyer for 2 rounds until he and others gave me the slip near the end of the race. However my good places on races 4,5 and 8 was just enough to keep me ahead of my Australian and other competitors and I managed to win the Oceania Laser Great Grand Masters Championship.
Following some photos of our beach launching area and some sailing shots.

Visit to Christchurch Sailing Club, Dorset England
One of the highlights of our recent trip to Europe and England was our visit to the Christchurch Sailing Club in Dorset.
The club is situated on a estuary(not to dissimilar to our own) on the South Coast on England about 40ks from Southampton. We had previously made contact with the club prior to our departure from NZ and was invited to join the Commodore Philip Whiston and Ted & Pauline Varey for lunch at the club on an overcast Sunday in July.We thoroughly enjoyed their hospitality and were introduced to a number of their members. As the weekend was the start of the official school holidays there was no sailing scheduled for the weekend but it enabled me to have a good look around the club and yachts.
See photos attached.
The club membership is considerable larger than ours and caters for Keelers and Dinghies and has around 1000 members. It has a kitchen run independently of the club serving good lunchtime meals and snacks during the day.The bar is run by the club on a voluntary basis.
The sailing dinghies included Finns,Oks,Lasers,Optis and a number of English class yachts. The location of the club is in a very beautiful setting with the river Avon flowing by the club into the estuary. They also have a sea bar which cannot be crossed at low tide by keel boats so there are a lot of similarities to our own club.
Ted and Pauline Varey were wonderful hosts and spent Monday showing us around the sites of their beautiful town of Christchurch, the New Forest and Lymington(another major yachting location)

Clipper Round the World Race information evenings - Christchurchhttps://www.cyc.net.nz/single-post/2017/07/08/Clipper-Round-the-World-Race-information-evenings---Christchurchhttps://www.cyc.net.nz/single-post/2017/07/08/Clipper-Round-the-World-Race-information-evenings---ChristchurchFri, 07 Jul 2017 23:13:01 +0000
We are running a series of information evenings across Australia and New Zealand to recruit crew for our Round the World Yacht Race. The Clipper Race is a record breaking 40,000 nautical mile race on a fleet of 12 matched 70-foot ocean racing yachts which pass through Australia on their circumnavigation. We thought the race may be of interest to your members hence I am getting in touch.
We will be holding an information evening in Christchurch on the 14th of September and I was wondering if this was of interest and something you would like to promote to your members via a newsletter, your website, social media or other means?
I have included some suggested copy below which you could use or adapt to suit your members and a flyer to send as an attachment. We also have printed posters (A4) which I can send out if you would like some to display in your club.
If you have any questions or require any additional information then please get in touch. I look forward to hearing from you.
Best Wishes,
Samantha
On Wednesday the 14th of September at Christchurch RSA, Della Parsons will be running an information evening about the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. A circumnavigator and TV documentary director, Della will share her insight about those eager to test their limits beyond belief over 11 months and more than 40,000nM in the world’s longest yacht race.
Come and hear about it from someone who has been there, stared Mother Nature in the eye and taken all she can muster. You will find out more about the selection process, training, the race, the fleet, stopovers, personal logistics and most importantly the race crew.
Della will also be bringing the newly launched VR360º video, an immersive experience of the 2015-16 race that finished in July. You'll either walk away inspired or scared. One thing you won't be is bored.
Booking essential via Eventbrite or email OceanRacer@Clipper-Ventures.com to register your interest.
